UNreality TV: Decoding Reality TV
Jennifer L. Pozner

Because "reality TV" is more lucrative than frank depictions of women's realities, media bombard us with sensationalistic and sexist fare like The Bachelor, Bridezillas and Married by America, and ply us with carbon-copy corporate crooners from Baby Spice to Britney Spears.  But are these dumbed-down, sexed-up offerings simply "what the public wants," as media companies claim, or is something else going on? In this multi-media presentation, Jennifer Pozner analyzes how pop culture reinforces gender stereotypes, exposes how the quest for profits compromises entertainment, and gives students tools they need to challenge media bias.

With wit, insight and sharp analysis, progressive journalist and media critic Jennifer Pozner, exposes how the media conglomerates serve corporate agendas, reinforce cultural stereotypes, and limit political debate about women's and human rights issues. Using multi-media clips & research, Pozner reveals how news outlets distort reality. Students will never look at media the same way again! They will also laugh. A lot!
