| Lessons from Iraq Mike Shiley Barack Obama has promised to usher in a new era of cooperation in the Middle East. Many hard-line Jews, Arabs and Americans have rejected any talk of compromise, while moderates around the world have a new hope for real change in the region. This centuries-old conflict weaves religious fundamentalism, natural resources, and human rights into a tangled web of social upheaval that is the powder keg of modern politics. Global oil consumption is booming while the supply is dwindling, extreme religious fundamentalism is on the rise, and green energy independence is still years away; making the Middle East the hottest issue in the world. Award winning filmmaker, lecturer and Smithsonian inductee, Mike Shiley, has lived and traveled extensively in the Middle East. His unique understanding of the Arab culture, grasp of the history of the region, and his film, Lessons from Iraq, combine to offer a fresh and balanced view based on his first hand experiences. Shiley will offer insights into the past, share lessons from the present and offer long term solutions that cut through the noise of partisan spin-politics. Mike will begin the program on your campus with an introduction, screen the film and then host a lively discussion, and Q & A. I wanted to thank you for your awesome performance last night. It was received very well, and you without a doubt got your message across to students and faculty alike here on campus. The war in Iraq is a topic that is not addressed nearly enough here on campus, and my hopes for this event were that this could be the seed that would start conversation and knowledge sharing. It was so nice to meet you, and hear your stories and your point of view. Your down to earth personality gives me hope that there are people in the world who can and will make a difference. Vanessa and I enjoyed your company, and loved being your temporary "entourage." Ha ha. I hope the rest of your tour on the road goes smoothly, and all is well. Take care, David Fifer |
